HOW

Be the change you want to see in the world.

We are thrilled to see so many of us already embarking on this journey, transforming their lives, consuming less, eating more healthily, upcycling, recycling, reusing, building regeneration communities…and our ambition is to help this trend grow.

But before we go back to our production studios and think tank offices, we are out and about over the European summer, hearing from students and school kids, neighbourhood and women groups to listen and learn.

We recognise THAT THE current systems do not work for us:

Transport
systems..

bring us traffic jams, air and noise pollution, cost a fortune and are a hazard to those who walk, cycle, roller-skate, surf, or however else you move your beautiful self about with skill and muscle power.

The food
system..

in the UK and many parts of the world has brought us a diet that is harmful to us and the planet. Highly processed, nutrient poor, energy dense foods often mean that we are undernourished but overfed.

The financial system…

rewards exploitation and pollution by not properly costing and accounting for damages caused to society and the living world around us. It furthers the accumulation of power in the hands of a few.

“You have to act as if it were possible to radically change the world. And you have to do it every day.”

What can I do?

When a critical mass of people begins to believe and act in a certain way, the collective consciousness of the community begins to shift. This is how we bring about change.

We come from the world of progressive businesses, policy makers and climate conferences, and find it jaw dropping how few of those people actually live the way they promote we all should live.

No matter your rank, or level of affluence, it is time to act for all of us humans.

We are working on a more detailed guide with more background and inspiration that will be on this site by January 2020. But don’t wait for us! The quick start guide will set you off in the right direction.

5 Step quick start guide

The sooner we start changing the little things in our life, the Better for everyone.

1. No more CO2 emissions

No matter your rank or lifestyle. Find your fossil crush and transform it.

Pondering about that short flight city break, or that beach holiday you promised yourself? This is a great place to start re-thinking your choices and taking positive steps to reduce your emissions.

Reducing air travel is one of the most effective things you can do to quickly to make a difference. Rethink that holiday or business flight, set yourself a quota for the year or take it out all together for a while... and invest the money you save in a new bicycle, e-scooter, or e-bicycle. Speak to your employer about the e-bike scheme, get into car sharing, share your rides, work from home more often… you get what we’re saying.

For all the folks that don’t travel by car or air because they simply can’t afford it, this abstinence is a great service to the environment, and our society would benefit from recognising that. If you happen to also be vegetarian or eat very little meat, you are practically guilt free in this zone. The daunting weight of emissions from flights and car journeys that are gradually choking us is not on your shoulders.

2. Cut down on toxic products

We know our environment is under stress and that the insects are struggling to survive, but are you aware how the effects of biodiversity decline are creeping into our homes and bodies?

Supermarket shelves are full of toxic products and the industry sells us the idea that a clean house is a sterile house. Truth is, a sterile house weakens your immune system. Anti-bacterial cleaners and moist wipes kill good bacteria and make the bad bacteria more dangerous.

If you also eat a lot of processed food and refined sugars, the good bacteria in your body might be reduced already and your immune system might already be struggling to keep you energised and fit. Taking the two together, the weak immune system from a poor diet in an environment with more aggressive germs, should wake up even the biggest skeptics.

For your own longevity and pain-freeness for heaven’s sake, make your home more natural please! Leave the anit-bacterial cleaners and wipes on the shelves. Easy to use and nice smelling cleaning products based on natural soaps, bicarbonate soda and vinegar are available to buy online and in well sorted retailers, so go hunt for them.

And now that you are E-biking your way to work perhaps get rid of that paved parking lot in your front garden and grow some bee friendly flowers instead. Be naughty and sow those seeds in every little corner you find, be bee-rebellious!

3. Choose local & organic food wherever possible

The concept of ‘industrialised food’ sounds scary. It conjures up images of a big machine throwing pink mush into rusty bowels while you wait in line in some post-apocalyptic crazy world. Well, the reality is not that far off.

Although it’s juicy and inviting and marketed in shiny packaging, fast foods and convenience foods are one of the main drivers behind the loss of habitats and biodiversity globally. You don’t need to go fully organic but consider buying organic greens, grains and meats whenever you can. They contain far more flavour and nutrients, plus they come with a reduced risk of contamination with hormones, antibiotics and pesticides. Your immune system will thank you!.

If organic is not an option for you, buy from local farms and producers as much as you can. They will want you to come back and do their best at offering the freshest produce. Many farmers are also happy to answer questions on how they treat their plants and animals, so don’t be shy to ask!

Even farmers without eco certification still apply good farming practices and reduce the use of toxic substances and in many cases they do their best to help habitat creation in your area. Support your local farmers and growers and help them maintain the landscape you love. Simple as that.

By doing so you will also avoid emissions from truck and shipping (of which there are hundreds of thousands on our seas every hour of the day, every day). Ever got annoyed but the trucks hammering through your village? Well, you can stop some of them.

4. Avoid plastic where you can

Avoiding plastic is a no brainer right? Well you will be surprised where they squeeze those little PLASTIC compounds in.

It is in our toothpastes, shampoos and cleaners, in the clothes you wear, and wrapped around your food in various ways until the food reaches your plate. It seems impossible to get rid of it! We tried! And we will keep trying, in our homes and families, and by working hard on the app that will help you to find the alternatives easier, and go plastic free faster.

Until then we all must keep trying everyday, so get lunch boxes and hand them over the counter to have them filled at your take-away or swanky London lunch place, wherever your plastic packaging guilt lies...

Pick up the rubbish that you see on the beaches and on the greens (we heard of an organisation that trains dogs to pick up plastic waste and love the idea! May many many dog owners be inspired by them!). If you buy vegetables from a local producer they will very likely come in a box and can go straight into your reusable bag.

5. Buy preloved, refurbished, upcycled, recycled

Our draws are full of electronics, our closets full of clothes, we have more than enough “stuff” to meet our needs.

Yet, the global fashion and electronics industries keep producing bigger quantities than ever before. If you still don’t have the right gadget or outfit for your needs, try to avoid buying new stuff where you can. Try refurbished phones, upcycled furniture, recycled clothes, it makes a difference. We know this sounds easier than it is and we are working on a way to help you find what you are looking for.

Handling instructions

Ok none of us think we need rules here. You know when you are doing your best. But remember, come 2030 the irreversible consequences of our actions will be felt globally…there are no second chances.

Changing your behaviour will of course be hard and sometimes a little uncomfortable, you will feel worn out and fed up. But these changes DO make a difference, to your wellbeing, your community and the world we live in. We are working on a way to make this visible to you and your community.

And as we know from the movies, there is no point facing the apocalypse in misery. This is your opportunity to fight destruction and have fun.

Principle 1

Be nice to yourself! Wind down, go offline, go into nature and enjoy her. Sing, dance, make music, get a massage! The healthier and stronger than you are, the better you will deal with what is to come. So chill-out everyone and make yourself some delicious food.

Principle 2

Don't be too hard on yourself about the changes you want to make. Sometimes we need to make exceptions. You know when you are doing your best. Just get back on it next day.
